Today is a sad day of remembrance for many of us. Forty years and several lifetimes have passed since the death of a great mustached American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Oh, you didn't realize Dr. King had a mustache? Well, it should be known that the African American community has been one of the stalwarts of the 'stache, keeping the hairy flame alive while others - notably white America - shaved their lip fur away. It is interesting how the mustache has continued to thrive among blacks. You can see it among the wealthy and the poor. It is considered an element of maleness that can be shared across all walks of life. It is a wonderful thing and we salute them.
Still, 40 years is an amazing amount of time since Dr. King was tragically killed in Memphis. And if you are visiting Memphis, the trip is not complete with a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum, a very impressive view into another time, a shameful past, and one that can seem very long and yet just like yesterday.
I'm sure much will be made of the anniversary and the fact that a black man is leading in the polls in the race for the presidency. I'm not sure what exactly to make of that ironic timing, other than that Barrack may be the modern-day Jackie Robinson - the right man at the right time.
It's a pity, however, that the Senator doesn't sport a mustache. If he did, he would look like this.
