If you watched NFC football on FOX this weekend, you know why it was significant. Sunday was the airing of the episode where Peter Griffin, the family guy on "The Family Guy," grew a mustache.
Now, the joke on the show seems to be that Peter, while a well intentioned regular sort of fellow, doesn't seem to be as successful as he would like to be. But when he grew a mustache it was a beauty and everyone around town was impressed with it. One mustache-wearer on the show even called a friend to tell him - that's the kind of camaraderie mustached-Americans share.
The episode used Peter's wonderful 'stache to show the heroism displayed by mustache-wearers when he ran into a burning business to save a man, as well as our ingenuity when the mustache was burned off and Peter replaced it with Brian, the family's talking dog. I've never thought of that one!
We were thrilled to see this positive depiction of the mustache in the media, a real turning point from the artists' conceptions on the 11 o'clock news we regularly have to endure. They have forced me to abandon my usual winter garb of ski mask and sunglasses when I shop at local convenience stores.
My only question about the episode was when his son mentioned Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen. I may not be the brightest bulb on the tree, but I could have sworn that they were suggesting something about Freddie that I didn't completely understand. I always knew he was a jolly, happy lead singer. Am I missing something here?
As for "Family Guy," I say keep the 'staches coming. If so, you will earn a regular viewer in this Nielsen family.
